Feel strongly about sustainability?

BIOEAST (the Central-Eastern European Initiative for Knowledge-based Agriculture, Aquaculture and Forestry in the Bioeconomy) was established in response to rapid change in the agri-food, aquaculture and forestry sectors and in environmental issues and rural areas.

The initiative dates back to 2015, and there are now BIOEAST hubs in Bulgaria, Czechia, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. It aims to establish a strategic research and innovation framework for working towards sustainable bioeconomies in the Central and Eastern European countries.

BIOEAST has now issued a Stakeholder Manifesto on Sustainable supply chains and strengthened local processing of bioresources in Central and Eastern Europe. This vast macro-region encompasses several EU Member States, the Western Balkans and Eastern Partnership Countries — in particular Ukraine and Moldova.

The Manifesto:

  • stresses the need to enhance local knowledge of environmentally-friendly technologies;
  • emphasises the importance of involving stakeholders from Central-Eastern Europe in the deployment of research, innovation and sustainable solutions with a view to delivering on Europe’s transition towards a circular and sustainable future;
  • calls for increased public investment in a joint research and innovation partnership to unlock the macro-region’s potential. The goal is to produce renewable biological resources and convert them sustainably into value-added products;
  • urges decision makers to prioritise the nexus of soil, freshwater, food systems and biomanufacturing to shape a sustainable future for this macro-region.

BIOEAST is calling for signatures from individuals and organisations, both within the Central-Eastern Europe macro-region and beyond.
