This COP16 side event, organised by the ECESP’s Leadership Group on Biodiversity & Climate, will explore the opportunities and anticipated benefits of using the circular economy as a tool for mainstreaming biodiversity in economic sectors.
The circular economy offers a frame for transformative change towards the sustainable use of natural resources and the respect of planetary boundaries. However, despite their environmental and socio-economic benefits, circular approaches are not sufficiently embedded in the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The event will:
- highlight and discuss insights from key publications on the nexus between biodiversity, climate and the circular economy,
- present good practices from the EU and beyond, showing how the circular economy can contribute – and is already contributing – to biodiversity goals.
These good practices will demonstrate that greater policy coherence, at international and national level, is essential to bring about transformative change. They will highlight the key role played by the Global Biodiversity Framework and in particular targets 10 and 15 which call for production and business conduct to be organised along more sustainable lines.
Speakers include:
- Alberto Arroyo Schnell, Head of Programme and Policy, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
- Arnaud Schwartz, member of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC)
- Marianne Kettunen, Policy and Institutions Operations Lead, Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF)
- Hugo Shally, Lead negotiator for COP16, DG ENV, European Commission
- Josip Pervan, Senior Manager, Policy Advocacy & Member Mobilization, World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)
Partners:
- European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF)
This event will take place on 1 November at 13:15-14:45 GMT-5 / 20:15-21:45 CET in the EU Pavilion in Cali. It will be webstreamed.
