The Secretariat of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Working Party on Agricultural Quality Standards is organising a roundtable discussion with meat industry experts on traceability and circularity issues. It will take place during the 33rd session of the intergovernmental Specialized Section on Standardization of Meat.
At its 2023 and 2024 sessions, the Specialized Section included seminar/roundtable discussions on sustainability issues related to meat and livestock. The 2023 discussions focused on impacts and measurement issues as regards greenhouse gas emissions from beef, and the role of meat in a circular food system. The 2024 discussions focused on animal raising claims, animal welfare, and digitalization of meat trade processes. In follow-up to the 2024 discussions, this roundtable will explore two interrelated issues linked to sustainability of meat value chains: (a) traceability (including of environmental aspects related to animal raising) and (b) circularity and use of by-products.
The discussions will cover:
- livestock/meat traceability
- opportunities to minimise waste and maximise the efficient use of by-products from slaughterhouses
- ECE standards on meat.
There will be experts from within and outside Europe.
This event will take place at 10:00–13:00 CEST on 27 August. It will be held at the Palais des Nations, Geneva and online.
Registration: Online registration and/or in person registration. Programme.
