International Repair Day is an annual celebration for everyone who makes repair happen in their communities around the world. It is organised by the Open Repair Alliance, an international group of organisations committed to working towards a world where electrical and electronic products are more durable and easier to repair. Every October, they celebrate the power of repair to bring their communities together, reduce the impact on the planet, learn new skills and so much more.
International Repair Day 2025 will take place on 18 October and focus on software obsolescence. On 14 October, just four days before International Repair Day and on International E-Waste Day itself, Microsoft will end free support for Windows 10, a decision that could lead to an enormous increase in electronic waste.
Globally, thousands of repair events and community efforts are taking action, breathing new life into computers, saving people money and cutting waste. They’re doing this by helping to install free and open source operating systems, both on computers still in use and in those prematurely discarded by people and companies who already upgraded hardware due to Microsoft’s decision.
The Restart Project, member of the Open Repair Alliance, has co-created The end of Windows 10 toolkit for community repair groups who want to support people affected by this issue. It offers practical advice on how to adapt repair events, run new kinds of events and work with others, as well as information about the options available for people with Windows 10 machines.
Whether you’re a repairer, community organiser, tinkerer, maker, repair business, campaigner or simply a fan of fixing, there are lots of ways you can join International Repair Day 2025. Check out this engagement toolkit featuring actions that you can take part in, ways to mark the day, social media assets, posters and more.
