On 1 November, the ECESP’s Leadership Group on Biodiversity & Climate, in cooperation with the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF), organised a COP16 side event exploring Towards a circular economy in harmony with nature.
Wrapping up COP16, this event explored the opportunities and anticipated benefits of using the circular economy as a tool for mainstreaming biodiversity in economic sectors and implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
It kicked off with a surprise appearance by Sara Yrjönmäki, the Finnish Youth Delegate for Nature, and Lise Coermann Nygaard, Denmark’s Youth Delegate to the UN on Climate and Environment. They delivered a letter supposed to be written by a child in 2050, emphasising both the key role of the circular economy in protecting and restoring nature and the need to address the current tendency to overconsumption.
With speakers from the IUCN, the EESC, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the European Commission, the event looked at insights from key publications on the nexus between biodiversity, climate and the circular economy, and presented good practices from the EU and beyond in specific sectors like the built environment and agri-food systems.
This was the last side event hosted at the EU Pavilion, but it still attracted a high level of interest and participation. The recording of the session is available – have a listen!
