Lake Yojoa is experiencing significant environmental challenges due to pollution and eutrophication affecting health, livelihoods and energy generation. The primary sources of pollution include agricultural runoff, untreated wastewater and mining discharges, which add excessive nutrients and contaminants to the lake. Addressing these issues requires comprehensive strategies and creative/innovative solutions that focus on reducing nutrient inflow, improving wastewater management and promoting sustainable agricultural practices to restore the ecological balance of Lake Yojoa under enhanced and renovated governance mechanisms.

The Government of Honduras and the EU, together with its Member States, jointly agreed in July 2023 to develop a comprehensive investment strategy for the recovery of the Yojoa Lake Basin, forming part of the EU-Latin America and Caribbean Global Gateway Investment Agenda.

On 30 May, the Roadshow INVEST YOJOA will bring together key stakeholders keen to contribute to the recovery of the basin and scale up investment. The Roadshow will promote dialogue between the public and private sectors, including the financial sector, and lay the groundwork for future collaboration and investment.

EU and Honduran companies are invited to attract investment and create technology transfer opportunities in: infrastructure development, sanitary sewer systems, wastewater treatment plants, solid waste management (landfills and rubbish collection), drinking water systems, increasing circular economy sustainable practices and promoting eco-friendly economic activities such as sustainable and cultural tourism, smart agriculture, irrigation, waste management, soil and water conservation and reforestation.

What to expect:

  • High-level meetings with Honduran authorities, EU and EU Member State representatives
  • B2B matchmaking sessions
  • Thematic sessions focusing on investment potential
