The European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP) is an international platform bringing together industry, science, regulators and stakeholders with a view to facilitating sustainable phosphorus management, including reuse and recycling.

It is holding two workshops on phosphorus as a Critical Raw Material and on White Phosphorus (P4) during EU Critical Raw Materials Week. The ESPP General Assembly will be held on the morning of 19 November and is restricted to members only.

In the afternoon of 19 November, there will be a workshop on Phosphate – an EU Critical Raw Material, key to food security and agriculture resilience, looking at:

  • Which nutrients are ‘critical’ for EU agriculture, regarding quantitative needs, supply security (EU production, global supply, EU supply security and quality criteria)?
  • Links between farm nutrient use efficiency, nutrient recycling and supply security
  • The EU Critical Raw Materials Act (2024/1252) centres on actions for “strategic” industries: should the EU have a Critical Agricultural Inputs Act?
  • How should the next EU Common Agricultural Policy 2028-2034 address nutrient security?

This will be followed by a networking session and dinner.

The workshop in the morning of 20 November will focus on P4 (white phosphorus) a ‘Strategic’ Raw Material for Europe? P4 (white phosphorus) is included in the EU Critical Raw Materials List but not in the sub-list of ‘Strategic’ Raw Materials despite P4 being essential in areas such as fire safety and batteries and despite the EU and the world market being dependent on only two suppliers: Vietnam and Kazakhstan.

This will be followed by a networking lunch.

This event will be held in English and in person on 19-20 November. You will be able to register via this page. Programme.
