Environmental factors / ecological footprint

For the past years, global warming has been a major problem in the world, therefore it has been foreseen that to be able to limit it to 1.5º, it is important to reduce the emissions generated by 7.6% every year from 2020 to 2030.

As the European Union has remarked, the flow of waste coming from the construction and demolition processes is one the heaviest and most voluminous one produced. The waste from these accounts to an average of 25-30% of all the waste that is produced in the EU.

Therefore, many circular strategies can be implemented to be able to contribute to the reduction of waste and negative impacts production. These strategies could be environmental, economic, among others.

A well-planned city public space system can create green networks to regenerate the ecological systems, restore the environmental connectivity and support biodiversity in urban areas. Public spaces play an important role in the ecological services as adaptation and mitigation strategies to climate change.

To mitigate this, plantings are useful as they have permeable surfaces which absorb water preventing possible flooding. Also, parks help reduce the heat generated by engines, air conditioners among others which increase the temperature in cities. In addition, parks provide home to several animals, helping maintain the biodiversity.

Circularity also contributes to this climate mitigation and adaption, as it prevents and manages the climate change. The concept of circularity is often connected to more interesting urban environments.
